The difference between Gulp and Swallow

When used as nouns, gulp means the usual amount swallowed, whereas swallow means a deep chasm or abyss in the earth.

When used as verbs, gulp means to swallow eagerly, or in large draughts, whereas swallow means to cause (food, drink etc.) to pass from the mouth into the stomach.


Gulp is also interjection with the meaning: indication of an involuntary fear reaction.
