The difference between Exaggerate and Understate
When used as verbs, exaggerate means to overstate, to describe more than is fact, whereas understate means to state (something) with less completeness than needed.

Exaggerate as a verb:
To overstate, to describe more than is fact.
Examples:
"I've told you a [[billion]] times not to exaggerate!"
"He said he'd slept with hundreds of girls, but I know he's exaggerating. The real number is about ten."

Understate as a verb (transitive):
To state (something) with less completeness than needed; to minimise or downplay.

To state (something) with a lack of emphasis, in order to express irony.

To state a quantity that is too low.
