The difference between Average and Middling

When used as nouns, average means the arithmetic mean, whereas middling means something of intermediate or average size, position, or quality. preceded by the: people of moderate means.

When used as adjectives, average means constituting or relating to the average, whereas middling means of intermediate or average size, position, or quality.

Average is also verb with the meaning: to compute the average of, especially the arithmetic mean.
