The difference between Adjacent and Near

When used as nouns, adjacent means something that lies next to something else, especially the side of a right triangle that is neither the hypotenuse nor the opposite, whereas near means the left side of a horse or of a team of horses pulling a carriage etc.

When used as prepositions, adjacent means next to, whereas near means close to, in close proximity to.

When used as adjectives, adjacent means lying next to, close, or contiguous, whereas near means physically close.


Near is also adverb with the meaning: having a small intervening distance with regard to something.

Near is also verb with the meaning: to come closer to.
