The difference between Abutting and Adjacent

When used as nouns, abutting means abutment, whereas adjacent means something that lies next to something else, especially the side of a right triangle that is neither the hypotenuse nor the opposite.

When used as adjectives, abutting means facing each other, front to front, whereas adjacent means lying next to, close, or contiguous.


Adjacent is also preposition with the meaning: next to.
