The difference between Nickname and Pet name

When used as nouns, nickname means a familiar, invented given name for a person or thing used instead of the actual name of the person or thing, whereas pet name means a nickname, especially a name used by those in love with one another.


Nickname is also verb with the meaning: to give a nickname to (a person or thing).
