The difference between Byname and Nickname

When used as nouns, byname means a secondary name for a person or thing, whereas nickname means a familiar, invented given name for a person or thing used instead of the actual name of the person or thing.

When used as verbs, byname means to assign a byname to, whereas nickname means to give a nickname to (a person or thing).
