The difference between Few and Much

When used as determiners, few means an indefinite, but usually small, number of, whereas much means a large amount of.

When used as pronouns, few means few people, few things, whereas much means a large amount or great extent.


Much is also adverb with the meaning: to a great extent.

Much is also adjective with the meaning: large, great.

  1. Few as a pronoun:

    Few people, few things.

    Examples:

    "Many are called, but few are chosen."

  1. Much as an adjective (obsolete):

    Large, great.

  1. Much as an adverb:

    To a great extent.

    Examples:

    "I don't like fish much."

    "He is much fatter than I remember him."

    "He left her, much to the satisfaction of her other suitor."

  2. Much as an adverb:

    Often; frequently.

    Examples:

    "Does he get drunk much?"

  1. Much as a pronoun:

    A large amount or great extent.

    Examples:

    "From those to whom much has been given much is expected."
