The difference between Backup and Extra

When used as nouns, backup means a reserve or substitute, whereas extra means something additional, such as an item above and beyond the ordinary school curriculum, or added to the usual charge on a bill.

When used as adjectives, backup means standby, reserve or extra, whereas extra means beyond what is due, usual, expected, or necessary.


Extra is also adverb with the meaning: to an extraordinary degree.
