The difference between Allowance and Sanction

When used as nouns, allowance means permission, whereas sanction means an approval, by an authority, generally one that makes something valid.

When used as verbs, allowance means to put upon a fixed allowance (especially of provisions and drink), whereas sanction means to ratify.
