The difference between Promote and Relegate

When used as verbs, promote means to raise (someone) to a more important, responsible, or remunerative job or rank, whereas relegate means exile or banish to a particular place.


Relegate is also noun with the meaning: a person who has been banished from proximity to rome for a set time, but without losing his civil rights.
