The difference between Kill time and While away
When used as verbs, kill time means to engage in an activity whose only purpose is to make the time seem to pass more quickly, whereas while away means to spend (time) idly but pleasantly.

Kill time as a verb (informal, intransitive):
To engage in an activity whose only purpose is to make the time seem to pass more quickly; to fill the time between activities.
Examples:
"She had nothing better to do, so she went to the bowling alley to kill time."

To spend (time) idly but pleasantly
Examples:
"We whiled away the hours playing cards."
