The difference between Dumb and Mute

When used as verbs, dumb means to silence, whereas mute means to silence, to make quiet.

When used as adjectives, dumb means unable to speak, whereas mute means not having the power of speech.


Mute is also noun with the meaning: a stopped consonant.
