The difference between Courtyard and Yard
When used as nouns, courtyard means an area, open to the sky, partially or wholly surrounded by walls or buildings, whereas yard means a small, usually uncultivated area adjoining or (now especially) within the precincts of a house or other building (wikipedia).
Yard is also verb with the meaning: to confine to a yard.
