When used as nouns, best means the supreme effort one can make, or has made, whereas optimum means the best or most favorable condition, or the greatest amount or degree possible under specific sets of comparable circumstances.
When used as adjectives, best means ., whereas optimum means best or most advantageous.
Best is also verb with the meaning: to surpass in skill or achievement.
