The Death of Fair Play Why Biological Realism is the Only Way to Save Women’s Sports

The Caster Semenya saga isn't a human rights tragedy. It’s a category error.

For a decade, the media has packaged this as a narrative of "disrespect" and "discrimination." They’ve turned a complex biological reality into a morality play where the IAAF is the villain and the athlete is a martyr. It’s a seductive story, but it’s built on a fundamental misunderstanding of why we separate sports by sex in the first place. If we stop pretending that feelings trump physiology, we have to admit the uncomfortable truth: Protecting the integrity of the female category requires hard lines, not soft sentiments.

The Myth of the Natural Advantage

Critics argue that Semenya’s condition—Differences of Sexual Development (DSD)—is just a "natural advantage," no different from Michael Phelps’ long arms or Usain Bolt’s fast-twitch muscle fibers. To explore the complete picture, we recommend the recent report by FOX Sports.

This is the most common, and most intellectually dishonest, argument in the room.

Phelps’ wingspan is a variation within the male category. Semenya’s high testosterone levels are a bridge between categories. We don't have a "short-armed" swimming league. We do, however, have a protected category for biological females because, without it, women would never stand on a podium.

The physiological gap between biological males and biological females is not a marginal 1% or 2%. In explosive events and middle-distance running, the performance gap is roughly 10% to 13%. That gap is driven almost entirely by the presence of $T$ (testosterone) during puberty and beyond.

When an athlete with XY chromosomes and internal testes competes in the female category, they aren't just "gifted." They are utilizing the primary engine of the male category to dominate a protected class. Calling it "disrespectful" to point this out is a refusal to acknowledge the basic mechanics of human biology.

High Testosterone is Not a Social Construct

We’ve entered a bizarre era where quantitative data is treated as an insult. The World Athletics regulations require DSD athletes in specific events to lower their testosterone levels to below 2.5 nmol/L.

The outcry? "It’s an invasion of the body."

Let’s be clear: High-performance sport is nothing but the regulation of the body. We tell athletes what they can eat, what supplements they can take, and what chemicals must stay out of their bloodstreams. We disqualify them for "natural" hematocrit levels that are too high because we’ve decided, as a collective, that certain biological thresholds preserve the spirit of the game.

The average biological female has a testosterone range of approximately 0.12 to 1.79 nmol/L. Those with DSD can have levels in the male range, which is typically 7.7 to 29.4 nmol/L.

Imagine a scenario where we allowed a heavyweight boxer to "identify" as a featherweight because he felt it was "disrespectful" to exclude him. The result wouldn't be inclusive; it would be a slaughter. In track and field, the "slaughter" is reflected in the record books and the podiums where biological females are pushed into fourth, fifth, and sixth place by individuals with a massive, testosterone-driven head start.

The Erasure of the Female Category

The "lazy consensus" says we should prioritize the inclusion of the individual over the integrity of the group. But you cannot have it both ways.

If you expand the definition of "woman" in sports to include anyone with any biological profile, you effectively abolish the female category. If the category is not based on biological sex—specifically the absence of male pubertal development—then it is a category based on nothing.

I’ve seen sports organizations crumble under the weight of PR pressure, terrified of being called "intolerant." They forget that sports are, by definition, discriminatory. We discriminate by age. We discriminate by weight. We discriminate by nationality. We discriminate by drug use.

We do this to create a "level" playing field where specific types of excellence can be celebrated. The female category exists to celebrate the excellence of the female body. When that category is forced to accommodate male-typical physiology, the very reason for its existence evaporates.

The Rights of the Many vs. The Rights of the One

The Semenya case is often framed as a violation of her right to compete. But what about the rights of the hundreds of women who have to line up against her?

Do they not have a right to a fair competition?
Do they not have a right to know that their years of training won't be negated by a biological outlier who possesses the physical traits of their male counterparts?

The sports world has become so obsessed with being "progressive" that it has become regressive for women. We are telling female athletes that their biological reality is less important than the identity of a few individuals. That is the true disrespect.

The Medicalization Fallacy

A recurring argument is that forcing athletes to take testosterone-suppressing medication is "unethical."

If an athlete chooses not to take the medication, they are not banned from sports. They are simply ineligible for a specific, protected category. They can compete in the male category or an "open" category.

The choice belongs to the athlete. But the rules of the category belong to the governing body. You don't have a "right" to play in a specific sandbox if you don't meet the entry requirements.

Stop Asking the Wrong Questions

The media asks: "Is this fair to Caster Semenya?"
The real question is: "Is the female category worth saving?"

If the answer is yes, then biological markers must be the gatekeeper. There is no version of this story where everyone is happy. Either you exclude a handful of DSD athletes from the female category to preserve its integrity, or you include them and watch as biological women are systematically erased from their own record books.

The data doesn't care about your politics. The stopwatch doesn't care about your feelings. A male-typical level of testosterone provides a physical advantage that no amount of training can overcome.

If we value women’s sports, we have to stop apologizing for the biology that makes them necessary. We have to stop treating the protection of women as an act of bigotry.

Reinforce the boundaries. Protect the category. Stop the charade.

Tell the athletes to get on the blocks and keep the $T$ levels where they belong—or find another race.
